Palnure Burn
We own 2 1/4 miles of the West bank of the burn which is a small tributary of the Lower Cree. In many ways it is its own diverse and separate system and is set in idyllic countryside amidst the Galloway hills. The Palnure is located about 15 minutes drive from Mochrum Park and 5 minutes drive from Broomisle Cottage. The first 11/4 miles downstream from Craignine Bridge is non tidal.
The lower mile is tidal and is the most productive on the whole water. It's tidal movements create the effect of regular spates and good catches can be made especially on the Lady Pool which can hold surprising numbers of Salmon and Seatrout even in drought conditions. Fly fishing is possible in open areas, but because of the wooded nature of the burn the most consistent success is had by the skillful use of the worm.
It is possible to stalk your fish with great caution. When successful the ensuing fight is something to be experienced, especially as these Palnure fish can be amongst the largest of the whole of the Cree system. Certainly a beautiful, different and fun place to catch migratory fish. This fishery can make an attractive alternative to your beat rota on the main rivers.
River Cree
We own approx. 2 1/2 miles of the Lower Cree. This fishing extends into the tidal waters which can be most beneficial in times of low water. A few Spring fish start to enter the river in early April. Although the river Bladnoch is the main Spring river the Cree is well worth a try for an early fish. Late Spring into summer is the most productive time with often large runs of Salmon/Grilse and Seatrout entering the river about July. Seatrout and Herling provide the fisher with excellent sport at night. This section of the Cree has deep holding pools such as Saughs, Colonels and Bridge which hold large numbers of Salmon in low water, but it also benefits from good fly pools such as Slaughter house pool, Ragg run, Willow, and Boat pool.
